Al Mawasi area is not served by any wastewater treatment plant. Unconnected households use cesspits and in the current economic situation, they are not being properly emptied. Cesspits have been discharged raw wastewater into the aquifer, and also flooding on the roads. It is planned to construct Wastewater Treatment network and treatment unit for the areas Al Laham and Al Malalha at Al Mawasi, which will treat the wastewater generated from the households of around 320 households. The proposed intervention by Action Against Hunger will directly impact the sanitation and hygiene conditions of targeted households in Al Laham and Al Malalha. The intervention will include the following components:
1. Construction of wastewater network with individual house connections.
2. Closing used cesspits by evacuation with suction trucks, cleaned and then filled with sand.
3. Construction of wastewater treatment unit using an advanced Sequence Batch Rector (SBR) system, which is an activated sludge treatment method.
4.Storage tank is to store the treated effluent to be used pumped into sand filters
5. Construction of a trunk line connected to the storage tank with submersible pump
6. Community awareness campaigns to improve practices and to increase knowledge relating to hygiene, nutrition, women's right and the division of labour in the household.
